The United Nations voted in 1999 to recognise Vesak Day as a significant Buddhist event, in a similar way that Easter and Christmas are recognised as public holidays. The United Nations has since encouraged nations and communities to hold their own United Nations Day of Vesak celebrations around the world to unite Buddhists of different traditions in the celebration of Vesak. Victoria itself will host one such celebration again this year, with the international event to be held in Thailand. This year’s Melbourne event is designed to have a performance feel.
